The origins of Sotogrande, an exceptional place

It was filipino-american bussinessman Joseph McMicking and his wife Mercedes Zóbel de Ayala who decided to launch the development of a luxury residential development in the mediterranean coast. The year was 1962, when his nephews Jaime and Enrique Zobel, inspired by its beauty, acquired a great deal of land at the mouth of the Guadiaro river in the small town of San Roque, in Cádiz. Their goal: to create an enclave where exclusive lifestyle met the splendor and serenity of a natural environment.

They wanted to present its residents with a wide array of services and sporting and recreational activities. To do so, they hired renown architects and urban planners that devised Sotogrande through a mindful design that preserved the natural environment while offering modern and high-quality infrastructures.

From the beginning, Sotogrande has stood out for its first-class facilities, from internationally acclaimed golf courses to polo clubs and exclusive beach clubs. On one instance, the Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande, opened its doors in 1964 and quickly became one of the best courses in Europe.

The Santa María Polo Club opened in 1965, consolidating Sotogrande as an emblematic base for the sport, hosting international tournaments and becoming a prominent meeting-point for polo enthusiasts. Today it boasts some superb facilities dedicated to hospitality and private and corporate events and it defines itself as a “landscape of outstanding beauty with more than a million square meters of green areas”.

Some recognizable faces of the international political, cultural and bussiness worlds come to this community in search of privacy and security, with vast green areas, fine sand beaches and a community that greatly values their lifestyle and their peace of mind. In fact, despite having experienced a considerable growth, it has maintained its prestige and exclusivity without losing its authenticity.

Sotogrande continues to be a referent of luxury and sophistication in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. Through exceptional design and exclusive services it remains a destination for those in search of a subtle luxury in a unique natural enviroment.
